Location of West Point Island |
West Point Island (also known as Albatross Island or Isla Remolinos in Spanish ) is an island that belongs to the western Falkland Islands . The island is located in the northwest of the Falkland Islands, near South Jason Island . It is 3.7 km long and 2.5 km wide. Its highest point, Mount Misery, is 337 m above sea level. Their cliffs reach a height of over 300 m in places.
The 12.5 km² island was settled around 1860. In addition to sheep farming as a livelihood, penguins and sea lions were hunted for oil production on the island in the 19th century. Typical species of the Falkland Islands, such as rockhopper penguins , black -browed albatrosses and the Commerson's dolphin , are native here.
Immigrants laid gardens on West Point, one of the few Falkland Islands with trees growing. Roses , thimbles , daisies and lilies grow in this rather untypical habitat .
