The West Washington Street Bridge is a historic arch bridge made of reinforced concrete in Muncie , Indiana in the United States . It crosses the White River , connecting Washington Street and Meeks Avenue. It was designed by Charles Armintrout , who was then the chief engineer of Delaware County. The bridge has four elliptical arches. The steel reinforcement of the concrete arches reach far into the pillars and abutments of the bridge, so that the pillars can be significantly thinner than usual. This design of the bridge was inspired by the work of Edwin Thacher .

history

By the late 1920s, Muncie's city limits had expanded. Land development associated with the construction of Ball State Teachers College and Ball General Hospital created new neighborhoods. The various areas of the city and its suburbs were initially replaced by trams , but these were shut down when automobile traffic became the main mode of transport. Because of this development, the West Washington Street Bridge became more important because it connected the suburbs to the center. Originally a metal truss bridge crossed the White River; however, due to the increasing traffic, this structure was considered unsafe. The plans and technical specifications for a new building were prepared by Charles Armintrout and approved in 1927. At the time, construction costs were estimated at $ 95,000  . Due to delays in the approval process, construction of the bridge did not begin until 1929 and was completed in 1930. The construction was carried out by Burk Construction Company and the cost of construction was $ 85,949 (around $ 1,314,000 in today's prices).

Historical meaning

The design of the West Washington Street Bridge was influenced by the work of engineer Edwin Thacher, who built bridges for the military during the Civil War . The West Washington Street Bridge has historical significance related to Muncie's growth during the automobile age. The engineering effort in building the bridge is also significant because it was innovative at the time the bridge was built. The West Washington Street Bridge was added to the National Register of Historic Places on March 19, 2008 .
