West and St Columba's Parish Church

The West and St Columba's Parish Church is a church building in the Scottish town of Brechin in the Council Area Angus . In 1971 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A. Furthermore, it forms a category B monument ensemble with various surrounding buildings.

The church building was erected in 1856. J. W. Hay and J. M. Hay are responsible for the planning . The community hall designed by Thomas Martin Cappon was expanded in 1897. The church, which became obsolete in the course of the 20th century, was sold to a Baptist congregation , which used it as the East Church for a time . The building has been empty since around 2004. In 2008 the building was entered on the Scotland List of Listed Buildings at Risk. In 2016, his condition was classified as relatively good with a moderate risk at the same time.

The church building stands at the junction of Panmure Street and Southesk Street ( A935 ) in the center of Brechin. The elaborate neo-Gothic quarry stone structure is designed in the decorated style . The bell tower is in front of the hall church on the south facade . In contrast, this is made with stone blocks of different sizes, which were built into a layered masonry. Stepped buttresses run along its edges . At the foot there is the pointed arch portal with a profiled archivolt . Above this is a wide, four-part tracery . The tapering tower closes with a pointed, octagonal helmet with suspected portholes . The east facade facing the street is designed with four, the west facade with five ogival tracery.
