Westerburg

The Westerburg is a lost castle in the East Frisian municipality of Dornum in the Aurich district , Lower Saxony . It stood in the center of the town on what is now the street Coldhörn .

history

The Westerburg was built in the 14th century like the other two chief castles of the place, the Norderburg and the Osterburg - the later Beningaburg . It consisted of a stone house and an outer bailey. Both were enclosed by a moat. The facility was originally owned by Eger , the second son of the Dornum chief Hero Attena . Eger bequeathed the castle to his son Hicko and the latter to his daughter Idze, who was married to Tamme Kankena von Wittmund. In the course of the conflict with the Hanseatic League because of the support of piracy by East Frisian chiefs and cities, Ulrich Cirksena , who was allied with the Hanseatic city of Hamburg, captured Tamme Kankena. He was only released again after he ceded the Westerburg to the Cirksena . Ulrich later handed the castle over to Chief Ayelt Beninga zu Hinte , from whose widow Ulrich's wife Theda finally bought it. In exchange for the Friedeburg , Theda gave the Dornum building to the brothers Hero and Hicko von Dornum. Like the other two Dornum castles, the Westerburg was destroyed in the course of the Saxon feud , but was not rebuilt afterwards. A pearl grove mill was built on Burgplatz in 1719.
