Theda Ukena, Countess of East Frisia

Life

Theda Ukena was the granddaughter and heiress of chief Focko Ukena (died 1436). She was born in Oldersum in 1432 as the daughter of Uko Fockena and Heba, daughter of the chief Lütet Attena of Dornum. It was probably named after her grandmother Theda von Reide, Focko Ukena's first wife. Her father was murdered in June 1432.

In 1455 she became the second wife of Ulrich I from the house of Cirksena , who had been Count of East Frisia since 1464. From this marriage there were six children between 1457 and 1465: Heba, Gela, who later became Count Enno I , Edzard I - known as the Count of East Frisia "the great", Uco and Almuth. Theda brought among other things claims to Oldersum into the marriage, which considerably weakened the ruling chief Wiard von Oldersum.

After Ulrich's death in 1466, she took over the official business of the House of Cirksena , supported by the chief Sibet Attena . In 1474 she succeeded in taking possession of the late chief Cirk von Friedeburg against the claims of Gerhard VI. from Oldenburg to secure for East Frisia. From around 1480, her sons took over the government without a formal transfer of power.

Theda died on November 16, 1494 in Greetsiel. She was buried in the Marienthal monastery.
