Westerholz is a district of the Wesendorf municipality in Lower Saxony . Until it was incorporated in 1974, Westerholz was an independent municipality. Today the place has about 500 inhabitants and is part of the community Wesendorf in the district of Gifhorn .

Geographical location

The place Westerholz is in the southern part of the Lüneburg Heath near the federal highway 4 .

history

The first (indirect) documentary mention of Westerholz comes from a document from the year 1275. Westerholz is mentioned as one of two Slavic villages that are separated from the parish of Hankensbüttel together with Wahrenholz . Around the year 1548 the settlement of Wesendorf started from Westerholz.

On March 1, 1974, Westerholz was incorporated into the community of Wesendorf.

In 2003 the place was included in the village renewal program of the state of Lower Saxony.
