The Westerlichttoren is a lighthouse in the Dutch province of Zeeland . It is located in the village of Nieuw Haamstede near Burgh-Haamstede on the former double island of Schouwen-Duiveland .

construction

The stone lighthouse designed by L. Valk was built in 1837 and with its height of 53 meters is one of the tallest lighthouses in the Netherlands. At the base, the listed tower consists of 2.50 meter thick walls, which become thinner with increasing height. On the outside, the tower was provided with red and white spirals to make it clearly visible from the nearby airfield.

beacon

The beacon of the lighthouse has been controlled automatically for years and is regulated by a light sensor. Since 1953, the light has been produced by a 2000 watt gas discharge tube that replaced a 4200 watt electric light bulb. The optics generate the following identifier : Fl (2 + 1) W 15s. In a 15-second interval, two flashes of light in quick succession and a single, much later flash occur.

Illustration on the 250 guilder note

The Westerlichttoren is best known for the fact that it was depicted on the 250 guilder banknote for years . Colloquially, this banknote was given the name De Vuurtoren (English: the lighthouse).
