The finish line of the Western States 100 in Placer High School

The Western States Endurance Run , or Western States 100 for short , is a 100-mile (161 km) ultramarathon that takes place annually in the Sierra Nevada , California on the last weekend of June. It starts at Squaw Valley Ski Resort and ends at Placer High School in Auburn, California . The terrain is difficult, often with snow on the highest passes and high temperatures in the deep valleys towards the end of the run. There are 5500 vertical meters uphill and 7000 vertical meters downhill to conquer.

history

The run was finished for the first time by Gordy Ainsleigh in 1974. Ainsleigh had completed the Western States Trail Ride (Tevis Cup) on horseback in 1971 and 1972 , but in 1973 his new horse was withdrawn from the race due to lameness at the 29-mile VetGate . In 1974, Drucilla Barner, the first woman to win the Tevis Cup and secretary of the Western States Trail Foundation, inspired him to walk the Tevis Cup. 23 hours and 42 minutes later, Ainsleigh crossed the finish line at Auburn, proving that a runner can run the 100 miles in a day.

Results

Tim Twietmeyer finished 25 times under 24 hours and won five times. Scott Jurek won the race seven times in a row. Ann Trason has won the women 14 times.

In 2008 the run was not held due to poor air quality and smoke from forest fires.

In 2011, the Spaniard Kilian Jornet was the first runner from Europe to win the race. In the same year Ellie Greenwood from Great Britain was also the first winner from Europe.

In 2012 Ellie Greenwood managed to beat Ann Trason's women's record from 1994 by almost an hour and set a new best time of 16:47:19.

In 2018, Jim Walmsley broke the previous men's record with 14:30:04 h.

In 2019 Jim Walmsley broke his own record from the previous year with a time of 14:09:28 h. The runner-up, Jared Hazen, also remained with a time of 14:26:46 h below the record time of Jim Walmsley from the previous year.

As early as 1984, Jim King was the first man to run a time of less than 15 hours with a time of 14:54:00 h, which since the first event so far (as of July 2019) has only been Timothy Olson 2012, Rob Krar 2014 and 2015 and Jim Walmsley , Jared Hazen and Tom Evans 2019 succeeded.
