Westphalian folk song archive

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Westphalian folk song archive based in Münster consists of the parts written folk song archive and sound archive.

The archive, which belongs to the Folklore Commission for Westphalia at the Landschaftsverband Westfalen-Lippe , was officially founded in 1927. Collecting began as early as 1914 after the German Folk Song Archive was founded in Freiburg.

The Westphalian folk song archive consists of around 9,000 song sheets with single and multi-stanza songs, some of which have a melody. In addition, the archive has around 100 handwritten song books, some of which are in the original and some of which are copies, and come mainly from the first half of the 19th century. In practice, the collection was carried out by specially trained employees - especially teachers - who brought the songs together from various sources in the individual Westphalian towns.

The inventory is supplemented by more than 1000 hours of sound recordings, which the staff of the Folklore Commission made mainly between 1954 and 1990. They contain a unique collection of authentic audio contributions from folklore field research in Westphalia. In addition to folksong chants with corresponding explanations, the recordings also include narratives, interviews about customs and former work processes as well as memoirs. The song recordings contain the repertoire of individual folk song singers as well as collections of songs from different locations and songs from specific singing communities. In 2007/2008, the Department of Folklore / European Ethnology at the University of Münster, together with the Folklore Commission for Westphalia, digitized the recordings threatened by decay and the sensitive written folk song archive as part of a project funded by the German Research Foundation. All published song contributions are available online free of charge.
