The Wetar-Zwergohreule ( Otus tempestatis ) is an owl from the genus of scops owl . She lives exclusively on Wetar Island , which is part of the Lesser Sunda Islands .

description

The very small owl is 19 to 20 centimeters in length. The more common red-brown morph is strongly dashed on the upper side, the chest light cinnamon-colored with orange-colored markings and dark shaft lines, the belly white with cinnamon-colored and blackish spots. The gray morph is finely drawn everywhere with light spots and dark lines. The eyes are sulfur yellow, the beak blackish, the feather ears short and round. The grayish flesh-colored legs are feathered up to the base of the toes.

Originally described as a subspecies of the differently drawn Manado scops owl ( Otus manadensis ), it was then considered a subspecies of the larger Moluccan scops owl ( Otus magicus ). The status of an independent species is not confirmed.

Way of life

The wetar scops owl lives in primary and secondary forests , also in swampy areas as well as in plantations with trees. Voice, food and behavior are unknown.
