The weather pillar is a sandstone stele in Augsburg-Haunstetten . It is not a pillar of weather in the meteorological sense, but a pillar of saints . It is located opposite the Haunstetten natural swimming pool on Roggenstraße.

Legend

According to a local legend, the pillar was called the "weather pillar" because it should never have hailed in its vicinity .

history

Today's weather pillar is a replica. The original column was probably erected in the first half of the 17th century by the aristocratic convent of St. Stephan (Augsburg) ; This is indicated by the initials and the coat of arms of Abbess Dorothea von Schwendi . The monastery had possessions in Haunstetten since the beginning of the 15th century. The column probably served to indicate a property boundary and was originally probably in the area of today's Drusus- or Via-Claudia-Straße. The street "bei der Wetteräule" near the former location is a reminder of this. Formerly there was also a similar pillar near today's tram stop "Beim Dürren Ast".

The original column had to be removed because the weather had damaged it too much. Commissioned by the city of Haunstetten, the sculptor Sepp Mastaller from Augsburg-Oberhausen created a replica in 1963. The small monument shows changes in the overall form compared to the original; however, most of the images were taken true to the original.

Representations on the column

In addition to religious representations, a crosier and the family coat of arms of Abbess Dorothea von Schwendi, who came from the Swabian noble family Schwendi , were carved on the column as a bas-relief . Dorothea von Schwendi ruled the Kanonissenstift as abbess from 1612 to 1650. The original column also bore the abbess's initials (DASS) on the top.

The following religious representations are on the column:

  • towards the south: The birth of Christ . Below the inscription “the birth of christ”.
  • to the west: Saint Barbara with a tower and palm tree. Below the inscription “S. barbara ".
  • towards the north: The Evangelist John . Below the inscription "S.johannes".

The new column also received the following text, which is already badly weathered today: "In 1963 the column of saints from the 17th century, called the weather column, was rebuilt with the original motifs".
