Sepp Mastaller

Josef "Sepp" Mastaller , wrong: Marstaller, Marsteller (born September 30, 1915 in Augsburg-Oberhausen ; † November 26, 2004 in Stadtbergen ), was a German sculptor .

Life

Josef "Sepp" Mastaller was born in 1915 in the Augsburg district of Oberhausen. He came from a humble background and, from 1929 onwards, initially trained as a stonemason and sculptor. He attended the Augsburg Art School and from 1935 studied art under Josef Henselmann at the then State School for Applied Arts in Munich .

During the Second World War Mastaller did labor service and from 1939 military service in France, Romania and Hungary. He was taken prisoner by the Soviets , from which he fled in 1945. The Americans put him back into prison, from which he was released that same year. It was only from 1948 onwards that Mastaller was able to continue his artistic activity in Augsburg after several years of interruption due to the war.

Sepp Mastaller was married to Charlotte Kadelburg. He always had his center of life in Augsburg, but a son was born in 1949 in Marburg, Hesse . Several study trips took Sepp Mastaller to many European countries as well as Ceylon , India , Thailand and Cambodia .

In 1957, Sepp Mastaller was a member of the board of the Augsburg artists' association "Die Ecke".

Mastaller's artistic life's work includes more than 50 fountains , numerous sculptures and works for sacred buildings. He often chose bronze , stone or concrete as material . His sculptures can be found in many German cities as well as in Japan and the USA .

Some of his large sculptures were also made in limited editions as small bronze sculptures .

In 1963 Mastaller created the life-size statue of the church patron St. Canisius and the statue of Mary for the Canisius church in Augsburg-Hochfeld . The St. Ulrich statue above the main portal of the St. Ulrich Church in Nersingen was carved in shell limestone according to his design by Josef Konzal . He designed the chancel of the St. Bernhard Church in Kissing , consecrated in 1955, in 1969. For the Catholic Church of St. Ulrich and Afra in Feuchtwangen , Mastaller created the side ambo in 1960/1961 and designed the approximately two meter high holy water column in the entrance area in relief with scenes from the lives of the two saints . Sepp Mastaller also created the cross relief in the funeral hall at the cemetery in Augsburg-Göggingen in 1971/1972.
