The Weyprecht Glacier ( Norwegian Weyprechtbreen ) is an outlet glacier on the island of Jan Mayen, which is politically part of Norway . It was named by Henrik Mohn , the head of the Norwegian North Sea Expedition 1876–1878, after the German naval officer in the Austro-Hungarian service Carl Weyprecht , who led the Austro-Hungarian North Pole Expedition from 1872 to 1874 with Julius Payer , which led to the discovery of Franz Josef Lands led.
geography
The Weyprecht Glacier begins in the horseshoe-shaped crater of the Beerenberg , which opens to the northwest. On the flank of this northernmost active volcano on earth, it flows in steep cascades to the coast - limited by the Krognessryggen in the southwest and the Nunatak Isbrodden and the Isbroddfonna ice field in the northeast. After 6.8 km and an altitude difference of over 2000 m, the Weyprecht glacier calves directly into the sea in a 650 m wide and over 70 m high front. It is by far the most active glacier on the island. During the last volcanic eruption on Jan Mayen in January 1985, steam escaped in the upper area of the glacier and a collapse basin formed.
