Whipping Boy (English for " whipping boy") is an Irish alternative rock band that was founded in Dublin in 1988 .

The band was founded under the name "Lolita and the Whipping Boy" as a cover band for Velvet Underground and The Fall Songs. When the female guitarist left the band, she only called herself "Whipping Boy". After two EPs were released on an independent label, the band got a contract with "Liquid Records" and released their debut album "Submarine". The album itself was not a commercial success, but the band gained a certain reputation through their live concerts, as the singer tended to injure himself with broken glass on stage. In 1994 Columbia Records released the album " Heartworm ", from which three singles were released. In 1998, the band broke up after Columbia broke the contract with them. The third album "Whipping Boy", which was unfinished at the time, was self-published in 2000. In 2005 there was a reunion with a few concerts in Ireland.
