Josy Meidinger

Josy Meidinger (born December 19, 1899 in Schäftlarn ; † June 7, 1971 in Neuburg an der Donau ) was a German painter , silhouette artist and illustrator .

Life

Josy Meidinger was born in 1899 as the third child of high school assistant Johann Meidinger and his wife Magdalena in Schäftlarn Abbey . After a short time in Donauwörth , she came to Neuburg an der Donau with her family in 1909 (through the transfer of her father). The girls' lyceum was followed by studies at the Royal School of Applied Arts in Munich from 1916 to 1919 , at that time a substitute for the academy for girls. In 1920 she settled in Neuburg an der Donau as a freelance artist, where, apart from longer stays in Augsburg and Nuremberg, she stayed until the end of her life. Her life was shaped by the Christian faith , admiration for her great patrons, Crown Prince Rupprecht of Bavaria and his wife Duchess Marie in Bavaria , who gave her free apartment in Neuburg Castle after their rooms in the castle were devastated by interned foreign workers from 1945 in the Grünau hunting lodge near Neuburg , granted, and through selfless love for people, animals and nature. It also marks her entire life's work.

As varied as Josy Meidinger's work is in terms of content and technology, the basis is always an emotionally sound drawing. From her she developed paintings, woodcuts and linocuts, a variety of graphics and even stage sets, but especially the filigree paper cuts , only with scissors and traditionally made from one piece, sometimes with multi-layered colored backgrounds. More than 1,800 paper cuts are known, of which many hundreds were published as illustrations in books, magazines, on calendars and postcards at home and abroad by 1938. In 1938 the connections to foreign countries and the oppressed Christian publishers dried up.
For the years 1920 to around 1939, Josy Meidinger, along with Johanna Beckmann and Lotte Reiniger, is probably the most prominent German silhouette artist, also “equal to artists like Ernst Moritz Engert”.

Major works

  • "Drei-König-Legende", 34 paper cuts with up to 7 layers of colored background, 9 × 10 cm, 1926, mounted in glass for wall projection during the performances of the "Legend of the 3 Magi" by Gustav Schwab,
  • "TOTENTANZ", 14 black silhouettes, 1930, 8.5 × 10 cm, as glass slides for wall projection on the occasion of the performance of the mystery play " Totentanz " by Gottfried Haaß-Berkow, arranged by Max Gümbel-Seiling, and 22 sheets of "Totentanz" with some graphics appeared as a book in 1996, and
  • 39 “Habsburg cuts” to illustrate fairy tale writings and poems by Empress Elisabeth of Austria , commissioned by Marie Luise von Wallersee , the Empress's niece. The cuts were made in 1932/1933, the contracts for publication were concluded in 1934, but the publication failed due to the illness and death of Mrs. von Wallersee.

Josy Meidinger u. a. from 1922 to 1939 participated annually with up to 50 works in Munich, in 1926 in Chicago, Nuremberg and Augsburg, in 1934 and 1948 in Neuburg ad Donau.
