Whiskey cola

Whiskey and cola

Whiskey Cola is a classic highball and long drink that consists of whiskey , cola and ice . Traditionally, Whiskey Cola is prepared with Bourbon Whiskey and Coca-Cola . However, numerous other variants are available in stores or at bars.

The drink is so popular that it can be bought ready-made in supermarkets. Although Whiskey Cola is a starting point for many whiskey drinkers, it later has a comparatively bad reputation with them: especially since the Cola dominates the taste of the whiskey and so the taste nuances of the whiskey are lost.

history

Whiskey Cola was first mentioned in writing in 1907 when the United States Bureau of Chemistry approved a Dr. Kebler sent to investigate the newly launched Coca-Cola and its consequences. In his report, he mentions a Coca-Cola highball that soldiers create by adding Coke to their whiskey. According to Kebler, this combination made the soldiers “wild and crazy”.

Preparation and taste

Whiskey Cola consists of whiskey that is infused with Cola. The standard ratio of bars is about one part whiskey to three parts cola, the pre-made drinks contain less whiskey and private mixes can contain all possible mixing ratios. Classically, bourbon whiskey , used for whiskey-Cola why the drink after Jack Daniels whiskey as Jack and Coke or Jackie Cola is known. On the one hand, because bourbon, like Coca-Cola, is a classic drink of the American southern states ; on the other hand, because the pronounced sweetness and sour note of the bourbon harmonizes comparatively well with the cola. However, this can be very different. In Spain, for example, DYC con Cola is a classic of the summer months, so that there, for example, immediately assembled containers of DYC and cola bottles are sold in the supermarket. A popular variant in North America is 7 and 7 , Seagram's Seven Crown Whiskey with 7 Up .

The drink adds a caramel-like sweetness and carbonation to the whiskey. However, the taste of the cola is usually much stronger, so that it is hardly possible to taste which whiskey was used. Compared to pure cola, the drink also subjectively loses carbon dioxide and the associated tingling sensation. The sugar in the cola prevents the whiskey from being digested quickly and thus ensures a lower blood alcohol content compared to the same amount of pure whiskey, the intoxication sets in later. However, this effect can be canceled out with sugar-free cola.

Dissemination and reception

The drink is almost ubiquitous and can be found in most bars. Due to the easy availability of the ingredients, it is just as often served at private parties. In Douglas Adams ' novel The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is joked that every civilization has on each planet either a drink, which, like gin and tonic sounds, or that sounds like a whiskey cola. For many whiskey drinkers, Whiskey Cola was the first whiskey drink they drank in their youth.

However, Whiskey Cola has a comparatively bad reputation. The Garden and gun magazine writes of the drink in his tribute that gourmets consider it a serious insult to the whiskey. In better cocktail bars you run the risk of disparaging remarks by the mixer or even refusing to mix the drink.

A well-known whiskey and cola drinker was the singer and bassist Lemmy of the band Motörhead . After his death at the end of 2015, many fans of the band and the musician called for his favorite drink, Jack Daniels whiskey with Coca-Cola on the rocks , to be called a lemmy around the world , and an online petition started in early 2016.

Musically, whiskey and cola appear again and again in texts. For example, in his single Diamond Rings and Old Barstools , country singer Tim McGraw compares couples that don't go together, like the eponymous diamond rings and bar stools, and couples that go perfectly together like whiskey and cola. Motörhead themselves immortalized the drink in Going to Brazil , in which song they describe an intercontinental flight to Brazil, on which whiskey and cola is consumed in abundance. All the booze is free // Airline going broke // Here come the lady // With another Jack and Coke. The Finnish band Lordi is dedicated to the widespread use of long drinks at parties in Nailed By The Hammer Of Frankenstein , with the beginning Jack and coke // Rock 'n' roll // Lose control .. The place will be a wreck by sunrise .. Dr Pepper // With Jameson // Now this is fun.
