The White Bear River (English for "White Bear River") is an approximately 110 km long tributary of Sandwich Bay in the southeast of Labrador in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador .

River course

The White Bear River has its source in the Mealy Mountains at an altitude of about 540  m . It flows about 60 kilometers in a predominantly eastward direction through a landscape rich in lakes. The White Bear River then turns north and gradually northeast for a 14-mile stretch, before flowing southeast for its final 10 miles and finally east-southeast. The White Bear River flows into the head end of a small side bay in the west of Sandwich Bay. The river drains an area of 1075 km². The entire course of the river and its catchment area are located within the Akami-Uapishkᵁ-KakKasuak-Mealy-Mountains National Park .

Fish fauna

The most common fish species in the river system are the Atlantic salmon and the brook char (anadromous form). At the mouth of the river there is a 7.6 m high waterfall, which greatly impedes fish migration . There are further waterfalls at river kilometers 37 and 49.9 with heights of 3.1 and 8.5 m respectively. These also represent partial obstacles for migratory fish .
