White Island (English, Norwegian Hvit Øya , each literally translated White Island ) is an icy, 21 km long and 8 km wide island off the coast of the East Antarctic Enderbyland . It is located 10 km north of the Sakellari Peninsula , from which it is separated by Styles Strait .
The Norwegian polar explorer Hjalmar Riiser-Larsen discovered and named it in January 1930. Its name was later translated into English. The existence was long in doubt, but was confirmed in March 1957 by participants in the 1st Soviet Antarctic Expedition and in February 1960 by scientists from the Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions .
