Whitefield is a city of about 23,000 people in the Metropolitan Borough of Bury , Greater Manchester , England .

It is located on hilly terrain above the Irwell Valley, along the south bank of the River Irwell , 4.8 km southeast of Bury and 7.9 km northwest of the city of Manchester . Prestwich and the M60 motorway are south. The urbanization of Whitefield largely coincided with the industrial revolution . The name Whitefield may have come from the medieval “bleachfields” used by Flemish settlers to whiten their tissues, or from the bright wheat fields in the area.
