Prestwich is a city in metropolitan county Greater Manchester in north-west England , between Salford , Manchester and Bury . Prestwich has the second largest Jewish community in the United Kingdom .
geography
Prestwich lies on the north bank of the River Irwell and is bordered by Whitefield to the north and Heaton Park to the east . To the west of the town are Prestwich Forest Park and the Irwell Valley with Agecroft and Clifton . South of Prestwich is the City of Salford . The A56 , which connects central Manchester with Bury, runs through the urban area in a north-south direction , and north of the town the M60 runs from west to east.
Geologic the area is characterized by the carbon resulting coal seams and sandstone from the phase of Westfalium C . Moreover lie in the Quaternary formed moraines of sand, gravel and boulder .
history
An old Roman road runs through the center of Prestwich, connecting Manchester to Longridge . It is believed that a Roman military camp was located in Prestwich. Prestwich was first recorded in the 11th century.
During the 19th century, another city center was built on Bury Old Road connecting Fairfax Road and Bury New Road. With the construction of the railway in 1881, traders moved from Manchester to Prestwich and built villas there. Prestwich Hospital was built in 1851. In 1912 the population had grown to 12,800 people, and from 1930 the available fields were cultivated, so that by 1961 the population rose to 31,000.
Infrastructure
The oldest part of Prestwich is on Bury New Road and is also called 'Prestwich Village', where you will find a shopping center, banks and various cafes. To the east of Prestwich is Heaton Park , which, with 259 hectares, is one of the largest urban parks in Europe .
Prestwich is well connected to Manchester, Bury and the rest of Greater Manchester. Bus routes also connect Prestwich with regions and locations in the north such as Salford and Monton . Express lines connect Prestwich with Manchester, Burnley and Pendle . In addition, Prestwich is served at four stations by the Manchester – Bury tram line.
Personalities
- William Sturgeon (1783–1850), physicist and inventor, built the first electric motor and the first electromagnetic solenoid . He lived in Prestwich and is buried in St. Mary's Cemetery.
