The White Ribbon Campaign is an international men's movement that works to end male violence in relationships, i.e. against domestic violence by men. The campaign was co-initiated in 1991 in Toronto , Canada, by the later chairman of the New Democratic Party , Jack Layton . The White Ribbon campaign aims to help curb everyday violence by men in intimate relationships . To this end, the campaign carries out public awareness work.

The symbol and sign of the campaign is a white bow. White Ribbon - which should be worn visibly by as many men as possible. Men ask other men:

  • not to use violence against women;

  • to work for a non-violent image of masculinity and for gender democracy.

The White Ribbon campaign aims to encourage men to become part of the solution to the problem of male violence. It has been active in Austria since 2000.

In Germany, a white ribbon is also used as a peace sign. In connection with the Iraq war in 2003, the two Aachen Peace Prize winners, Heiko Kauffmann and Bernhard Nolz, asked people to wear the White Peace Ribbon. During the demonstration against the Iraq war on February 15, 2003, several thousand people wore a white bow.
