As an awareness ribbon, the yellow ribbon is a symbol of solidarity and support. It is often used as a sign of support by military personnel or to draw attention to the chronic disease endometriosis .

Examples of usage

  • In 1917 George A. Norton published the song Round Her Neck She Wears a Yeller Ribbon in the USA . The song is about the love between Susie Simpkins and her lover and soldier Silas Hubbard:
'Round her neck she wears a yeller ribbon,
She wears it in winter and the summer so they say,
If you ask her "Why the decoration?"
She'll say "It's fur my lover who is fur, fur away."
  • In 1973, the successful hit Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Ole Oak Tree was released , in which a prisoner wrote to his loved one before he returned to his homeland after three years to tie a yellow ribbon around the old oak tree in town so that he could do it could already see from the bus whether she still loves him, and otherwise he could go on straight away; when it arrives, the tree is then covered over and over with bows.
  • In 1980/81 the yellow ribbon was used during the hostage-taking of Tehran and to greet the returning American hostages. On December 10, 1979, the Washington Post printed two articles discussing ringing church bells or lighting candles for the hostages. It added, Penelope ( "penne") Laingen, wife of the US chargé d'affaires in Tehran Bruce Laingen, which had been set there on 4 November 1979, 65 other hostages have, suggest "a yellow ribbon around the old oak tree tied" and this is also a possibility for others. Members of the hostages later founded the Family Liaison Action Group (FLAG) and made the yellow ribbon their symbol.
  • In 1986 the yellow ribbon became the symbol of the EDSA revolution in the Philippines . The Philippine President Benigno Aquino III. wears the yellow bow on his lapel as a reminder.
  • In the Gulf War of 1990/91, it then expressed the solidarity of the United States with its troops fighting far from home.
  • In Germany, too, the yellow ribbon is used to publicly express solidarity and support with Bundeswehr soldiers on missions abroad .
  • In mid-2012, the “The Yellow Ribbon” campaign was launched in the Rhenish lignite mining district , which is intended to show the bond with the villages on the edge of the pit.
  • In Spain, the yellow ribbon has been used since October 2017 as a symbol of support for imprisoned Catalan ministers ( Oriol Junqueras , Raül Romeva , Dolors Bassa, Meritxell Borràs, Carles Mundó, Joaquim Forn, Josep Rull, Jordi Turull) and activists ( Jordi Cuixart and Jordi Sànchez ), who were accused of "rebellion", rioting and embezzlement of public funds in the course of the Catalonia crisis , but are regarded by independence supporters as political prisoners. Some internationally known figures such as the former coach of FC Barcelona , Pep Guardiola , were seen with the loop. As a result, advocates of independence affixed yellow ribbons en masse to public facilities.
  • In South Korea , the yellow ribbon shows support and solidarity with the victims of the Sewol disaster.
