The Red Ribbon ( English Red Ribbon ) is a worldwide symbol of solidarity with HIV -infected and AIDS luxation.

The Awareness Ribbon was created in 1991 by the New York artist group Visual AIDS . The model was the yellow ribbon , which was first used in 1980/81 in connection with the hostage-taking of Tehran . In the Gulf War of 1990/91 this had become an expression of the United States' solidarity with its troops fighting far from home.

Red ribbons were worn for the first time in memory of the undercover agent of the Drug Enforcement Administration , Enrique "Kiki" Camarena , who was kidnapped on February 7, 1985 in Guadalajara (Mexico) and murdered a little later. This resulted in the Red Ribbon Week at the end of October, which in 1988 led to the declaration of a "Drug Free America Week" by the US Congress and President Ronald Reagan .

With its new meaning as the “AIDS ribbon”, the red ribbon quickly gained acceptance beyond the circles of artists and self- confessed homosexuals . Celebrities like Elizabeth Taylor and Lady Diana showed up with her in public. In 1992 Alan Menken and Bill Lauch wore them when they received the Oscar for Best Song for Howard Ashman, who died of AIDS in 1991 . In the meantime, the ribbon is worn not only by the Life Ball organizer Gery Keszler , but also by the former Austrian Chancellor Alfred Gusenbauer and the presenter Alfons Haider , even at the Vienna Opera Ball .

On December 1st ( World AIDS Day ) 2013, the longest AIDS ribbon in the world at 1.5 kilometers was laid out around the Regensburg Cathedral . This had previously been knitted from red wool in individual parts by volunteers from all over Germany and even from Greece .

In Germany, a red ribbon has been protected as a figurative mark and as a three-dimensional mark for the German AIDS Foundation since May 4, 1995 .
