Whitlock's Mill Light Station

Whitlock's Mill Lighthouse

Whitlock's Mill lighthouse was built in 1909 as the last and northernmost in the state of Maine . In the USA there are only lighthouses located on the Great Lakes and in Alaska located further north.

Whitlock's Mill Lighthouse replaced a beacon built in 1892, where a red lantern was hung from a pole. The conical brick tower over a cylindrical granite base rises on the south bank of the St. Croix River . He directed traffic between Eastport and Calais, Maine , using a flashing green light 32 ft. (10 m) above water level.

Although the facility includes a two-story caretaker's house, a pyramid-shaped bell tower and an oil storage facility, it was only in operation seasonally, as the river is not navigable in winter due to ice drifts. In the 1970s, the government declared the lighthouse redundant and closed it. The city of Calais refused the right of first refusal to which it was entitled and thus the property went into private ownership. The St. Croix View parking lot on US Highway 1 has a beautiful view of the property 3.5 miles south of downtown Calais. The lighthouse is 0.2 miles to the west.

On January 21, 1988, Whitlock's Mill Light Station was added to the National Register of Historic Places .
