Who Dies in Siberian Slush is a funeral doom band formed in 2003 .

history

Evander "ES" Sinque founded Who Dies in Siberian Slush in 2003 as a solo project. After the publication of two demos, a band formed around Sinque, with which the musical direction of the project expanded. After a demo recorded together as a band and a music video for the piece Mobius Ring , the band appeared live for the first time at the second Shadow Doom Festival. While the line-up continued to change, the group performed occasionally and recorded a first album. For the release of the debut Bitterness of the Years That Are Lost in November 2010, Who Dies in Siberian Slush signed a contract with the Russian label Solitude Productions . The release followed various festival appearances as well as the recording and release of the split EP Four Fragments of Fading Life , which was presented together with Ego Depth , via the Sinque-operated label Moscow Funeral League Records . In the following years, the line-up changed to Sinque. With the expansion of the band constellation was accompanied by a continuous change in the style presented, meanwhile Sinque emphasized that he was acting as a conceptual head.

“I'm still responsible for the concept, the music, the lyrics and the sound. At the moment I feel the need to complete the severely restricted, heavy and down-tuned Death Doom with wind instruments . "

- Evander "ES" Sinque in November 2014 quoted from Aleksey Evdokimov

Meanwhile, the band released several albums in cooperation with Solitude Productions, Moscow Funeral League Records and Frozen Light Records , including a new recording of the debut album, which was the first Russian Death Doom and Funeral Doom album to be released on LP. In addition, a split EP with My Shameful was released in 2014 . In the course of the constant changes Sinque forced two variants of the band line-up, one for studio recordings and one for the performances of the band. Sinque explained this step with different interests and obligations of the musicians involved. The distribution of tasks also enabled the group to perform at the Dutch Doom Days festival and to play other international concerts.

Meaning and reception

Despite the late release of their debut, the band is considered to be one of the founders of the style of Russian Funeral Doom, as well as one of the most remarkable and central institutions of the Russian Funeral Doom scene. Bitterness of the Years That Are Lost has been declared a classic in the genre over the years and a major pioneer in the popularity of Russian Funeral and Death Doom. In the meantime, the first albums were rated as mediocre to negative in reviews of their time, subsequent releases as well as the new recording of the debut received high praise. For Doom-Metal.com, Aleks Evdokimov describes the end point of musical development with the split EP The Symmetry of Grief , released in 2014 together with My Shameful via MFL Records . On this EP, flute and trombone were used for the first time, which had a lasting impact on the sound of the band. Following this publication, the reception of the group also changed. Since then, Who Dies in Siberian Slush has been largely perceived positively.

style

The webzine Doom-Metal.com describes the music played by Who Dies in Siberian Slush as "Funeral Death Doom with a melodic and sometimes even smooth side". The arrangements of the various instruments are "complex and elegant" and form a contrast to the "unsettling cave-like growls ". The instrumentalists brought in changed the style presented by Who Dies in Siberian Slush. From a funeral doom that was described as “compositions that are dominated by pressing guitar riffs and deep growls” and in which the keyboard “sets specific accents in isolated places”, to a funeral doom “with a dark variety and beveled harmonies . The septet uses [...] broken growls, a piano, flute and brass, but concerns about a resulting guitar shortage need not exist, because they already rule ”.
