WhyEurope is a non-partisan and independent non-profit organization that was founded in 2016 in Freiburg im Breisgau . The aim of the initiative is to convey the advantages of European cooperation for the individual citizen in an innovative way. WhyEurope eV has been a registered association in Germany since September 2017 . The association currently has over 30 members in 10 European countries.

Background and story

The initiative was founded by Hans-Christoph Schlüter, Benedikt Erasmus Kau and Mirko Moser-Abt. According to her statements, the three students observed growing euroscepticism and right-wing populism with concern. The result of the Brexit referendum was ultimately the trigger for them to take action. They decided to post pictures with simple pro-European slogans on Facebook , Twitter and Instagram .

Communication style

WhyEurope follows a style of communication it calls "positive populism ". The founders describe the approach as simple, emotional and personal. They avoid complicated and technical terms in their slogans and simplify them. You see yourself as a countermovement to critics of Europe.

independence

Since its inception, WhyEurope has emphasized the initiative's independent nature. The organization is independent. Despite contact with the European Union, members repeatedly distanced themselves from the institutions of the European Union . WhyEurope rejects funding from the European Union and other political organizations.

Relationship with other organizations

WhyEurope has cooperated several times with other pro-European initiatives. In spring 2016, the founders Benedikt Kau and Hans-Christoph Schlüter worked closely with Daniel Röder and Sabine Röder, who started the Pulse of Europe demonstrations at the time . Pulse of Europe took over the “Blijf bij ons” campaign from WhyEurope, which focused on the Dutch elections.

Further collaborations took place with the Young European Federalists and the Loud Europeans .

reception

On January 31, 2017, Marine Le Pen ( Front National ) published a parliamentary question in the European Parliament regarding a potential grant to WhyEuropes by the European Commission . Commissioner Günther Oettinger replied that WhyEurope was never funded by the European Commission and that the name of the initiative was not in the central system.

In November 2017 WhyEurope received the European Public Communication Award from the European Committee of the Regions . The award was presented to the founders and members during EuroPCom in the European Parliament.

In May 2018 WhyEurope was awarded the Arno Esch Prize .

In September 2018 WhyEurope was awarded the “Filippas Engel” prize.
