Wido from Osnabrück
Wido von Osnabrück also Wicho , Wiho or Guido (died 1101 ) was bishop of Osnabrück from 1093 to 1101 . In the dispute between the Pope and the Emperor, he was on the side of Henry IV and wrote a pamphlet on the subject before he became bishop.
Life
He was canon in Osnabrück and was last provost of the cathedral . During the investiture controversy, he wrote a pamphlet "Liber de controversia inter Hildebrandum et Heinricum imperatorem" (On the dispute between Hildebrand the First Gregory VII and Emperor Heinrich). This was written between 1084 and 1085 on behalf of Benno II of Osnabrück and Liemar of Bremen . In it he justifies the ordination of Archbishop Wibert of Ravenna as Pope Clement III. At the same time he rejected the excommunication of Henry IV by Gregory VII . The anointed king is lifted out of the sphere of the laity. Only an extract from the year 1118 has come down to us.
In 1093 he became Bishop of Osnabrück. As such, he continued the work of his predecessors. He succeeded in securing properties that they had prepared to acquire. During his time, the cathedral and the bishop's residence in Osnabrück were destroyed by fire. But the relics could be saved. He has lived on the Iburg ever since .
