The Wiederkreuz , also German cross , is a multiplication of the Latin cross .

The repetition of the cross shape is an old motif that can be found in pre-Christian times. In a Christian context it is probably a symbol for the five wounds of Christ , the Gnostics use it as a symbol of the fourfold mystery .

It can be confused with the Gothic cross with its noses , a simple Greek cross that has two noses on each arm .
