The Wien Energie Gasnetz was a natural gas distribution system operator and part of Wiener Stadtwerke Holding AG , which owns 100% of the City of Vienna. At the end of July 2013, the company was merged with Wien Energie Stromnetz to form the newly founded company Wiener Netze .

history

The first Viennese gasworks was founded in 1899 with the construction of the Simmering gasworks and the associated gasometers . It served the purpose of putting the city's gas supply on its own and thus no longer having to rely on the Imperial Continental Gas Association (ICGA). In 1911 the outskirts of Vienna were connected by the Leopoldau gas works . The ICGA contracts were not renewed after this year.

During the Second World War, both gas works and the pipe network were partially badly damaged. Shortly before the end of the war, all production came to a standstill. It took until the end of 1946 for the original supply to be ensured by restarting the Leopoldau gasworks. Due to the shortage of coal, however, gas blocking periods were repeatedly necessary for the next three years. In 1978, after an eight-year conversion phase, the previously used town gas , a mixture of coal, generator and water gas, was replaced by the non-toxic natural gas .

Over the years, the company has developed from a gas producer to today's distribution network operator. Wien Energie Gasnetz was founded in its current form in 1998, then under the name Wiengas GmbH .

Distribution network

Wien Energie Gasnetz operates the distribution network for the whole of Vienna and 15 surrounding communities in Lower Austria. The natural gas that is fed in comes mainly from Russia, Norway and Austria. Currently (as of 2011) Austria can cover 20 percent of its own requirements itself.

Wien Energie Gasnetz's natural gas distribution network covers a total of around 3,500 kilometers and around 670,000 customers are supplied via this network. In the 2011/2012 financial year, 1.9 billion Nm³ of natural gas was passed through.
