The Wiesmoor nursery in Wiesmoor (East Friesland) is one of the largest nurseries for flowering potted plants ( i.e. indoor plants , balcony plants , container flowering shrubs ) in Germany. For many years it was the largest potted plant nursery in Germany. The eight times larger Emsflower overtook her this rank.

It is operated by the "Wiesmoor-Gärtnerei und Baumschule GmbH". The company's production department has a greenhouse area of around 85,000 m², in which 4.5 million plants are produced annually, and an affiliated tree nursery with a total area of more than 100 hectares (mostly bog plants, especially rhododendrons , with a population of around one Quarter of a million copies). A garden center with eight branches in the region, which was built in 1974, is attached to the nursery . The operational areas total 330 hectares. Around 160 employees are employed there.

Historical administration building of the Wiesmoor nursery (today tourist information)

The Wiesmoor nursery was founded in 1925 as part of the former Nordwestdeutsche Kraftwerke AG (NWK), at that time with an area under glass of 11,000 m². The greenhouses were heated by the waste heat from a NWK power plant operated with peat from a nearby mining area, the Wiesmoor peat power plant . Vegetables were grown until 1965, then the greenhouse facilities were completely rebuilt (at that time the most modern nursery in Europe with 39,000 m²) and converted to ornamental plants (completion by 1967).

In 1972 the merger with Wiesmoor Baumschule GmbH took place, one year later the NWK's 200-hectare agricultural operation was incorporated into the company (today partly used as a golf course (Golfclub Ostfriesland eV), partly permanent green fallow, rape cultivation for biodiesel , or tree nursery). In the following years structural extensions were made several times; In 1982 an existing hotel restaurant of the NWK was added. In 1985 the sole shareholder NWK merged to become PreussenElektra AG . Since 1995 there has been a cooperation in the marketing of the potted plants with the Nordwest-Blumen Gartenbaugenossenschaft eG. In 2000 PreussenElektra AG merged with Bayernwerk AG to form e.on Energie AG . In the following year, five senior employees under the leadership of the long-time managing director acquired all shares in the company as part of a management buy-out .

From March to October, visitors can take a guided tour of the tree nursery and greenhouse complex in a visitor's vehicle every day.
