The Wieterturm is a 19 m high observation tower in the urban area of Northeim , the district town of the Lower Saxony district of Northeim of the same name . The tower with a covered viewing platform is clad with slate panels. If the weather is suitable, the Harz can be seen in the northeast and the Solling in the west .

history

Location

The Wieterturm is located on the so-called 3rd Wieter , which towers over the Northeim market square with its 326 meters above sea level by 200 meters and is the highest mountain in Northeim.

According to the Chronicle of Franciscus Lubecus , there used to be a watch tower built in 1422 at this point . After the Thirty Years War it had no function, so it fell into disrepair. In the 19th century, the surrounding area was linked , so that the right to hat the monastery property no longer existed and reforestation could be carried out.

Emergence

As the reforestation of the Wieter soon blocked the view, the idea arose in 1881 to build a lookout tower here, which should allow a wide all-round view of the landscape. The municipal beautification association collected 900 marks for this project within a very short time, and respected citizens, such as B. Mayor Suadicani and District Court Judge Traumann, founded a special committee . Within a few months, donations of more than 2000 marks could be collected and a tower building association founded in 1883 became a support association. If one had initially hoped that the planned 3,600 marks would be enough for the construction, the total costs amounted to 6,000 marks. At first only a beam structure was planned, but then the decision was made to build a massive structure.

The foundation stone was finally laid on June 28, 1883. Although the building was then accessible, there were no safety measures such as railings, which were added later. In 1911, the plank cladding attached to the outside of the tower was replaced by a slate cladding. In 1983 the 100th anniversary of the tower was celebrated with great sympathy from the population.

Redevelopment

When it came to the 125th anniversary in 2008, the Wieterturm was undergoing extensive renovation work. The many years had taken a toll on the building and a renovation was urgently needed. Since the 27,000 euros required for this were missing in the course of the difficult budget situation in the city, part of it was earned through the sale of tickets. More than 3000 guests attended the festival. The renovation was completed in 2009.
