Vikings (Wiki)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The abbreviation WIKINGER stands for " WIKI N ext G eneration E nhanced R epository" and describes an interdisciplinary research project funded with 1 million euros by the e-Science initiative of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, which specifically provides a platform for cooperative knowledge generation on the Internet to create for scientists. This is done on the basis of semantic networks and Wiki technology. The project ran from October 2005 to October 2008 at the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Duisburg-Essen .

While the exchange of information among scientists has so far mainly taken place via traditional channels (publications in books and journals , conferences , bilateral communication), further potential for networked knowledge management is to be tapped.

The WIKINGER project therefore wants to offer a platform with which scientists can effectively use the semantic web to access the respective knowledge databases in their field and to create new knowledge collaboratively with the help of a wiki system. Scientists are to be supported in particular in networking new contributions with existing knowledge. It's about a kind of Wikipedia , which - unlike this - is to be used for scientific research. An exemplary area of research is initially the history of Catholicism in the 19th and 20th centuries. The system is then to be transferred to other humanities and natural science research areas.

The aim of the project is to develop a web-based “Biographical-Bibliographical Handbook for Catholic Germany since 1800”.
