Wikitravel is an internet project with the aim of creating a free travel guide . Wikitravel is designed as a wiki and uses the MediaWiki software . In order to keep the content of the Wikitravel project free, the copyleft license " Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike" was used. Although the project is inspired by Wikipedia , it is not a sister project and is not operated by the Wikimedia Foundation . Former Wikitravel authors founded the Wikivoyage platform , which has officially been a sister project of Wikipedia since January 2013.
history
Wikitravel started in July 2003 in English. It was founded by Evan Prodromou and Michele Ann Jenkins. A German version followed on October 7, 2004. In April 2007 there were 15 language variants, namely (sorted by size in descending order) English, Italian, German, Japanese, French, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish, Dutch, Catalan, Romanian, Esperanto, Hungarian, Polish, Finnish and Hindi. A Russian and a Chinese version were added.
On April 20, 2006, the sale of the domain wikitravel.org to Internet Brands was announced. Since the latter has announced that it will be advertising on Wikitravel and because of growing dissatisfaction with the management style of the project, most German-speaking administrators and some authors have decided to create a spin-off under the name Wikivoyage . With 2950 articles, the entire stock of the German-language Wikitravel was taken over and since December 2006 Wikivoyage has been running independently.
On May 1, 2007, Wikitravel won the Webby Award in the Travel category. In 2007 Wikitravel Extra was launched. Here, users can blog and discuss their personal travel experiences. Since April 1st, 2008 Wikitravel has been financed by Google advertising .
Since 2010, the parent company Internet Brands Inc. has been part of the private equity company Hellman & Friedman .
