Viktor Mikhailovich Zhdanov ( Russian Виктор Михайлович Жданов , scientific. Transliteration Viktor Michajlovič Ždanov * Feb. 1 . Jul / 14. February  1914 greg. In Schtepino (now Swjatohoriwka) yekaterinoslav governorate , Russian Empire ; † 14. July 1987 in Moscow , USSR ) was a Soviet epidemiologist and virologist . He did important work on viruses (such as influenza and infectious hepatitis) and the molecular biology of viruses. He received the Order of the October Revolution , twice the Lenin Prize , the State Prize of the USSR (1983), the Order of the Red Banner of Labor , the Order of the Red Star and the Ivanovsky Prize (1969).

Life

In 1936, Zhdanov finished his studies at the Kharkiv Medical School and in 1941 graduated from the Faculty of Physics of the Leningrad State University . From 1936 to 1946 he worked as a doctor for the border troops of the Interior Ministry of the Soviet Union . From 1946 to 1951 he worked as a laboratory manager in Kharkiv. Then he headed the Charkiwe Institute of Microbiology and Epidemiology II Metschnikow . In 1944 he obtained his doctorate as a candidate in the healing sciences. Three years later he obtained a doctorate in medical science. In 1949 Zhdanov became a professor .

In 1961 he headed the testing and research institute for virology DI Iwanowski . From 1956, Zhdanov worked as chief editor at the magazine Problems of Microbiology . In 1958 he developed the smallpox liquidation program with VI Vaschkow and MA Morozow . It was offered at the time of the 9th session of the World Health Assembly. In 1955, Zhdanov became Deputy Minister of Health in the Bulganin cabinet . As deputy minister, Zhdanov continued his smallpox liquidation program through lobbying. In 1960 he was elected a member of the Soviet Academy of Medical Sciences. At the end of his life he researched the human immunodeficiency virus . Diagnostic tests were developed for acquired immunodeficiency syndrome under the direction of Zhdanov.

Zhdanov was buried in Moscow's Kunzewo Cemetery in July 1987.
