Wild strawberry student movement

The Wild Strawberries student movement ( Chinese  野草莓運動  /  野草莓运动 , Pinyin Ye cǎoméi Yun , English Wild Strawberry Student Movement , in short野草莓even Action1106 ) was carried by student protest movement in the Republic of China on Taiwan . It was directed against the policy of rapprochement between President Ma Ying-jeou , who was elected in 2008, to the People's Republic of China and the police crackdown on demonstrators.

The protests began on 6 November 2008 during a visit by Chen Yunlin , chairman of the resident in the People's Republic of China, "the Association for Relations across the Taiwan Strait " ( Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits , ARATS) in Taipei . Chen met with President Ma to negotiate the expansion of shipping, air, and mail routes between the two states. He has been the highest-ranking political representative of the People's Republic of China to visit Taiwan since the end of the Chinese Civil War in 1949.

Protesting student

After tough action by the Taipei police against a group of initially 400 students who formed a human chain to protest Chen's visit, a sit-in at the Executive Yuan began as a protest against the strict right of assembly, which did not allow demonstrations in government buildings. Not only was the use of the flag of the opposition pan-green Democratic Progressive Party banned, but also the waving of the official flag of the Republic of China . This was forcibly removed by the police and led to a pan-green and pan-blue cross-camp demonstration. The waving of the flag of the People's Republic of China (by a few people), however, remained unopposed. The students have repeatedly emphasized that they do not belong to any existing political camp.

The strong police intervention frightened the people of Taiwan, comparisons with the White Terror 20 years earlier by the current ruling party Kuomintang arose and calls for human rights were loud.

designation

The name "Wilde Erdbeeren" was based on the Wilde Lilien student movement of 1990 and the ironic designation of the cohorts born from 1980 onwards as the "strawberry generation" ( 草莓 , Cǎoméi zú ). This generation was criticized, especially by members of the older generation of Taiwan, as being well cared for, spoiled, selfish, not performance-oriented and politically uninterested. She grew up in times of economic abundance and political liberalization and did not experience the earlier "hard times" of labor-intensive economic development and the rigid one-party rule of the Kuomintang. The protesting students therefore added the attribute “wild” to indicate that the “strawberry generation” was by no means as passive and unidealistic as it has been clichéd.

Demonstrations

The chain of demonstrations began in front of the main building of the Executive Yuan. After 24 hours, the police tried to disperse the demonstrators by making temporary arrests. After a prepared regrouping plan, the students met again in front of the National Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall .

Due to the circumstances and events surrounding Chen's visit, the students made the following demands on the government:

  1. President Ma Ying-jeou ( 馬英九 ) and Premier Liu Chao-shiuan ( 劉兆玄 ) have to apologize publicly in front of the people of Taiwan.
  2. Police chief Wang Cho-chiun ( 王卓鈞 ) and the chairman of the national security service Tsai Chao-ming ( 蔡朝明 ) are to resign with immediate effect.
  3. The right of assembly should be revised and relaxed in favor of the citizens.

Government statements

  • On November 11, 2008, Premier Liu told the Liberty Times, “ I will not apologize. With a matter like this, you only have to wait two days for it to pass. "
  • On December 11th, 2008, students of the Wild Strawberry Student Movement and demonstrators for a free Tibet were forcibly removed by the police from Liberty Square in front of the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall because this peaceful demonstration would not comply with the right of assembly.
  • On November 13th, 2008, President Ma Ying-jeou made a radio address to the students and said that police chief Wang Cho-chiun ( 王卓鈞 ) and the chairman of the national security service Tsai Chao-ming ( 蔡朝明 ) could improve, but he couldn't See reason for resignation.

Wild berries house

Since the end of the sit-in on January 4, 2009, a new house was inaugurated on January 11, in which the student movement set up its own organizational center. The house was named "Wildberry House" ( 野 苺 之 家 , Yěméizhījiā , English WildBerry House ). The address is: No.9, 7 Alley, 28 Lane, Tung-An St. Zhongzheng District , Taipei.
