Wildenstein waterfall

The Wildensteiner Wasserfall ( Slovenian Podkanjski slap ) in Carinthia is one of the highest free-falling waterfalls in Europe. It is formed by the Wildensteiner Bach , which flows into the Drau not far from the Vellach .

location

The waterfall is not far from the village of Gallizien below the summit of the Hochobir . A road leads to a gravel and partially paved parking lot, from which you can reach the waterfall in about 20 minutes on a steep forest path. There is a small platform about 30 meters from the fall. Closer access is prohibited due to the risk of falling rocks, a fence should prevent people from walking further here.

Surname

The waterfall owes its name to the Wildenstein castle ruins above, which are said to have been destroyed in the Friuli earthquake in 1348 . Today a district of the cadastral municipality of Gallizien bears the name Wildenstein.
