The Wilderness International Foundation is a German foundation based in Dresden and Berlin . It was founded in 2008 by 24 donors. The organization is committed to protecting areas in the temperate rainforest on the west coast of Canada . There, plots of land with a land register entry are bought in order to protect them legally and permanently.

In addition, expedition trips financed by so-called environmental grants are carried out. Here young people should experience nature in threatened regions and thus become multipliers of the protection idea.

Environmental education and wilderness run

The foundation endeavors to work with children and young people and to raise their awareness of the issues of nature and environmental protection. For this purpose, every year sponsored runs , the so-called wilderness runs, under the motto “Take a Walk for the Wild” with students from all over Germany. In preparation for this, lectures give the students insights into environmental protection and information about the ecosystem of the temperate rainforest in Western Canada and its threats. According to the foundation, 80% of the donations go directly to wilderness protection. The foundation bears the costs of the event through its own sponsors. Schools can call up 20% of the money for their own local environmental projects.

Environmental Ambassador Program - Wisdom Seekers, Knowledge Keepers

Since 2008, Wilderness International has been awarding scholarships to participants in the Wilderness Run approximately every two years. Students who are selected after an application and interview process have the opportunity to travel with the foundation to the areas that they have helped protect.

Through the natural and cultural experience in Canada, the expedition participants should broaden their view of the world and their understanding of the fragile ecosystem. During your stay in Canada you will work with an international research team on your own research projects. In Germany they then give lectures and create public exhibitions. An integral part of the so-called environmental ambassador program is also the exchange with young people and elders of the First Nations . In this way, the participants should learn more about the relationship of these peoples to nature, their traditions and the challenges over the years. The environmental ambassador program is aimed at students in grades 9 to 11 who have already participated in one or more wilderness runs.
