The park is located on a hill in the forest about 1.5 kilometers southeast of Bad Mergentheim. Over 70 different animal species native to Europe such as birds of prey , lynx , fallow and red deer , bison , wild boar and otter live in largely natural enclosures on an area of around 35 hectares .

With up to 30 animals, the wildlife park is home to what is probably the largest wolf pack in Europe. Since wolves are very shy and afraid of humans, they usually hide in their spacious enclosure.

During the feeding tours that take place twice a day, you can see the entire wolf pack. When feeding, all animals are explained in detail and their natural habitat is pointed out. There are also flight demonstrations with pigeons and birds of prey .

An exception in wildlife parks is the beaver enclosure and its accessible beaver den . Animal species that are rare in the wild, such as the European pond turtle , also have a home in the wildlife park.

The animal population is supplemented by some forms of domestic animals. The working demonstrations of domestic and farm animals such as herding dogs , draft horses , house ollies , domestic goats and carts of oxen , in which the traditional cooperation between animals and humans is demonstrated, are interesting . There is also a play farm with a petting zoo.

The wildlife park was the location for an episode of the zoo documentary Adventure Zoo .

history

The Bad Mergentheim wildlife park was founded in 1974 through a private initiative. The wildlife park has been home to a pack of wolves since the 1980s. In 2000 the park was taken over by the Rügamer family and the range of wildlife parks was subsequently expanded. In September 2014, the 40th anniversary of the wildlife park was celebrated with a summer party. On October 23 of the same year, a nationwide environmental education symposium took place in the Bad Mergentheim Wildlife Park, at which representatives of the Baden-Württemberg Environmental Academy, the German Wildlife Enclosure Association, representatives of wildlife parks, zoos, nature conservation organizations and nature conservation authorities focused on the subject of "Wildlife Park, Animal Park, Zoo - Extracurricular Learning locations between aspiration and reality ”dealt with various educational topics in the focus of animal and nature mediation.

A forest school home is used for forest and nature exploration for scout groups and school classes. It includes a forest hut in which up to 80 children can sleep with supervisors, six Indian tepees with space for 50 people, eleven burial caves for a total of 44 people and a "Koboldburg" for 48 additional people.
