Wilfredo García (photographer)

Wilfredo García Domenech , also Wifredo García Domenech , (born June 15, 1935 in Barcelona , † September 1, 1988 in Santo Domingo ) was a Dominican photographer.

García studied chemistry and pharmacy at the Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo until 1955 . This was followed by postgraduate studies in nutrition and food analysis at the University of Kansas . He was a professor of photography at the Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo and the Universidad Pedro Henríquez Ureña . He founded the photographer groups Jueves 68 and Fotogrupo (1977) and the Casa Fotográfica de Wifredo García , an institution that functioned as a museum, school, laboratory and exhibition house.

García's works have been exhibited in Spain, France, Mexico, Panama, Colombia, the USA, Puerto Rico, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Belgium, Holland, England, Nicaragua, Peru, Ecuador, Cuba and Martinique and can be found in the permanent collections the Musée de l'Homme in París, the Galería de Arte Moderno in Santo Domingo, the Museo del Hombre Dominicano and the Museo de las Casas Reales . He has received many awards; Among other things, he received the First Prize for Color Photography at the Concurso Abelardo Rodríguez Urdaneta in Spain (1981), two honorable mentions at the Concurso Fotográfico Américas (1981), the Grand Special Prize of the Jury in Cartagena and First Prize at the FAO competition in Santo Domingo.

In addition to articles on photography in magazines such as El Caribe , Hoy and Listín Diario , he published six books on the theory and practice of photography, including La Catedral del Bosque (1981), Algo de mí (1974) and Fotografía, un Arte para nuestro Siglo (1982 ). An exhibition of his works took place in 2009 in Santo Domingo.
