Wilfried Schäfer (born September 5, 1951 in Schwerte ; † August 7, 2003 ) was a German physicist in the field of theoretical semiconductor optics .

biography

Wilfried Schäfer studied physics at the University of Dortmund , received his doctorate there in 1980 and qualified as a professor in 1988 for theoretical physics with a thesis on highly excited semiconductors . In 1988 he moved to Forschungszentrum Jülich as a research assistant . He stayed several times for research stays in the USA . a. at Bell Laboratories in Murray Hill , New Jersey . His work on the description of Coulomb correlations and on the electron - phonon interaction in semiconductors on the basis of non-equilibrium Green functions is still considered to be pioneering today. He set new standards with his numerical simulations of many-particle effects. Schäfer has also been a professor at the University of Dortmund since 1996.
