history

The private Hofmann Institute was founded in 1853 by the Singhofen pedagogue Wilhelm Hofmann . At that time the institute was already a boarding school . After the original “Bürgererschule” had attained the rank of “Middle School” (Realschule) in the last century, it became a “state-recognized high school” in the 1920s .

Towards the end of the Second World War , the gym and school building were destroyed. From 1946 lessons took place again, but in the former boarding school building; the students were housed in the leased Katz Castle above St. Goarshausen . The owner family was not able to finance the reconstruction of a residential building for their students.

The then St. Goarshausen district bought the school in 1957 and, with the help of the State of Rhineland-Palatinate, converted it into a “state high school”. With the nationalization, the construction of a new school building soon began, which was completed in 1964. In addition to classrooms, the school building also housed a gymnasium, which also served as an auditorium, science rooms and, until the 1990s, two language laboratories .

Increasing numbers of pupils required an expansion of the grammar school. Additional classrooms were set up in the district office, which had become vacant as part of an administrative reform (see history of the Rhein-Lahn district ).

In 1984 the Loreley Hall was built in St. Goarshausen , which is primarily used as a school sports hall, but can also be used by the city of St. Goarshausen and clubs. In 1991 the last major expansion of the Wilhelm-Hofmann-Gymnasium took place with the addition of the transverse building on the Rhine side.

In 2009 the library moved from the main building to the converted and renovated warehouse of the former district office. As a result of this move, one of the music rooms was relocated to the old library and thus enlarged. In addition, interactive whiteboards were installed in some classrooms and equipped with laptops.

In 2010 the first school fire brigade in Rhineland-Palatinate was put into service with an exercise at the WHG.

In 2016, short-distance projectors were installed in all classrooms and subject rooms.
