Wilhelm Geiler

Wilhelm Geiler (born August 21, 1819 in Westerstede , Grand Duchy of Oldenburg ; † March 5, 1895 there ) was a German auctioneer and Low German local poet.

Life

Geiler became an official auctioneer in his hometown of Westerstede in 1855 . The street at the local court was named after him.

Artistic creation

Wilhelm Geiler published poems related to his homeland in the Low German language in various newspapers . Shortly after the founding of the empire , he wrote an additional stanza to the Oldenburg national anthem Heil dir, O Oldenburg! :

Hail, your prince, hail! He helped at times
the wonderfully great work that the German Reich are preparing,
when he combined himself with Prussia in a bloody bouquet.
To our princely house! High Fatherland!

For this stanza he received 25 gold marks . It was sung for the first time in 1872 at a folk festival in Westerstede.
