Wilhelm Gmelin (born April 14, 1891 , † December 9, 1978 ) was a German football player who was active as a goalkeeper for Eintracht Frankfurt and its predecessor clubs.

Career

Gmelin began his career in 1907 at FC Victoria 1899 in Frankfurt . Four years later, the club merged with the Frankfurter Kickers , so that the goalkeeper played for the new club Frankfurter FV (Kickers-Victoria) . Another nine years later the clubs were merged again, which eventually became the Eintracht Frankfurt gymnastics and sports community from 1861 . In 1911/12, Gmelin's team lost only two of twenty-two matches, thus securing the North Circle Championship and qualifying for the finals for the South German Championship for the first time. Against the teams of SpVgg Fürth , the Karlsruher FV and Phönix Mannheim , the Frankfurt team came to only two draws. In 1912/13 they secured their district title defense and thus took part again in the South German title fights. They just failed in the championship race. In the following year, after the Nordkreistitel was won again, it was only enough for second place in the South German. After the outbreak of World War I, gaming operations were temporarily suspended. After the end of the war, the former football players came together again. In 1920 and 1921 Gmelin then won the North Main Championship with the club before ending his career. In the 1920 title, the Frankfurt team won the title, although the first game against FC Hanau 93 , which Eintracht won 3-1, was counted against them, as Gmelin ran out of play. As a result, you were again a participant in the South German championships. There Gmelin was finally used in every game. They missed the title and thus the qualification at the German championship again, but the club set a warning when they and Gmelin played 0-0 in the second leg against the eventual German champions 1. FC Nürnberg .
