Wilhelm Gottfried Bauer (* 1790 in Frohburg ; † April 24, 1855 in Leipzig ) was a German portrait painter and copier.

Bauer studied portrait painting from 1808 at the Dresden Art Academy and from July 12, 1817 at the Royal Academy of Arts in Munich .

He then worked as a portrait painter in Leipzig. He also made copies of the works of other artists as well as of the copperplate engravings. On August 11, 1823 he married Henriette Wilhelmine nee. Silent.

He was deaf and dumb. The year of his birth given by Georg Kaspar Nagler, 1779, is incorrect, as he stated that he was 26 years old when he enrolled in 1817. According to the Leipziger Zeitung of April 27, 1855, Wilhelm Gottfried Bauer died on April 24, 1855 at the age of 65.
