Wilhelm Hemecker
Wilhelm Wolfgang Hemecker (born May 5, 1955 ) is an Austrian literary scholar and has been director of the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for the History and Theory of Biography in Vienna since 2005.
Career
After completing his studies, Hemecker received a doctoral scholarship from the Pro Scientia Foundation, Austria, from 1985 to 1987. From 1988 he worked for two years as a research assistant at the Research Center and the Documentation Center for Austrian Philosophy at the University of Graz. From 1990 he was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the German Historical Institute, London (scholarship from the Volkswagen Foundation, Germany). At the same time he worked as a research assistant in the manuscript department at the German Literature Archive in the Schiller National Museum , Marbach from 1990 to 1993 . From 1994 to 1996 he was an assistant at the Institute for German Studies at the University of Vienna and then from 1997 to 2004 research assistant at the literary archive of the Austrian National Library in Vienna.
Since 2012 Hemecker has been professor for the history and theory of biography at the University of Vienna, Institute for European and Comparative Linguistics and Literature.
Hemecker was a curator of exhibitions a. a. about Rainer Maria Rilke and Mechtilde Lichnowsky as well as smaller ones about Paul Celan, Arthur Schnitzler and Stefan Zweig, belongs to the board of various societies, such as the International Rilke Society (2000-2016), the International College Morphomata (since 2015) and the European section of International Auto / Biography Association (IABA Europe, since 2009) and acts as a reviewer. Research stays have taken him to Harvard, Cambridge, UCLA, the University of St. Petersburg, the German Historical Institute, London and the Rockefeller Study Center Bellagio. He was also a juror for the Manès Sperber Prize and the Austrian State Prize for Science Journalism.
He researches mainly in the following areas: literature from 1780 to the present, Viennese modernism (interdisciplinary), poetry and theory of poetry, theory and history of biography, history of psychoanalysis, memoria, manuscriptology, archives.
