Valentin Beselin (born December 21, 1628 in Rostock ; † May 3, 1684 ibid) was a German merchant and senator in Rostock.

Life

Valentin Beselin was born in 1628 as the son of the Rostock merchant, prefect of the Nikolaikirche and senator Johann Beselin (1596–1653) and his wife Justina, née. Frese (1602-1630). When he was 17 he went to Gdansk, where he learned Polish and worked for the merchant Martin Tolman. He only returned to Rostock after the death of his parents, where he is referred to as a merchant in the 1658 town register. On February 25, 1667 he was elected councilor. He turned down the call of the citizens to become mayor in 1682.

Valentin Beselin married Catharina Wedow (1641–1661) on January 18, 1659, the couple had two children: Catharina Dorothea (1659–1689) and the lawyer, councilor and mayor Johann Joachim (1661–1718). After the early death of his wife, he married Regina Elisabeth Hagemeister in 1662. This marriage had seven children: Lucas (1663–1702), Magdalena Sophia, Valentin Friedrich (1666–1687), Heinrich (1667–1712), Justina Regina (1668–1742), Anna Elisabeth and Catharina Sophia. The daughter Justina Regina married the later Rostock mayor Christian Michael Stever (1657–1722) in 1688 . His grandson Valentin Johann Beselin , son of Johann Joachim, also became mayor of Rostock.
