Holy Family from the House of Canigiani ( Sacra Famiglia Canigiani ) is the title of a painting by Raphael from 1506–1508 in Florence. The 131 × 107 cm picture (oil paints on poplar wood) is in the permanent exhibition of the Alte Pinakothek in Munich.

description

The painting shows from left to right St. Elizabeth with her little son John , Joseph of Nazareth , Mary and her baby Jesus in a summer landscape. John holds a banner in his hand ( ECCE AGNUS DEI"Behold the Lamb of God"). Glances and gestures intertwine the relationships between the figures, each with their own characters and postures. Two groups of putti in the upper corners of the picture complete the composition; they had been painted over in the 18th century and were only exposed again in 1983. The cut-out hem of the Mary's dress shows the inscription RAPHAEL VRBINAS( fig. ).

Style and composition

The painting dates from the time of Raphael's stay in Florence (1505–1508). Here he was particularly influenced by Leonardo , who painted similar pyramidal compositions in front of landscape backgrounds and Fra Bartolommeo , whose serious solemnity and bright colors are also reflected in this symmetrically composed picture . Directions and gestures intertwine the relationships between the figures, each with their own characters and postural motifs.

history

First, the Florentine family of Domenico Canigiani owned the painting, which was used as a household altar, as Giorgio Vasari reports. Later it belonged to the Medici, and in 1691 it was given to Cosimo III. of Tuscany to Johann Wilhelm von der Pfalz , who resided in Düsseldorf Castle , from whose picture gallery the picture with the electoral collection migrated to Munich in 1805/1806. Two putti , which contribute to the compositional completion at the upper edge of the picture, were painted over in the 18th century, but were exposed again in 1983.
