Wilhelm I. Embriaco

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Wilhelm I. Embriaco († between 1118 and 1127) was a Genoese admiral .

He came from a family of vice counts Embriaco from Genoa, and had taken part in the storming of Jerusalem during the First Crusade in 1099 . Between 1102 and 1110 Wilhelm is mentioned as consul of Genoa. 1103/04 he was the commander of a Genoese fleet and supported the crusader Raimund von St.-Gilles in the conquest of the outskirts of Tripoli , in particular in the conquest of Gibelet . In return, the Genoese received a third of gibelets.

In 1108 Wilhelm's son Hugo Embriaco came to Outremer together with his son Raimunds von St.-Gilles, Bertrand . In 1109, shortly before the conquest of Tripoli , Bertrand von St.-Gilles finally transferred all of Gibelet to Genoa. Wilhelm returned to Genoa and his son Hugo was appointed lord of Gibelet. Formally, Hugo was initially a Genoese governor, but he and his descendants succeeded in securing Gibelet as a hereditary fiefdom for his Embriaco family.
