Hugo I. Embriaco

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hugo I. Embriaco or Hugo I. von Gibelet († around 1135) was a Genoese admiral and the first lord of Gibelet in the county of Tripoli .

He was the son of the Genoese admiral Wilhelm I. Embriaco . In 1104, as Genoese naval commander, his father had supported the Provencal crusaders around Raimund von Saint-Gilles in the conquest of Gibelet , for which Genoa received a third from Gibelet in return.

Hugo Embriaco, like his father, commanded a Genoese fleet. In 1108 he accompanied Raimund's son Bertrand to Outremer . In the summer of 1108, shortly before Bertrand succeeded in conquering Tripoli , he transferred all of Gibelet to Genoa. Hugo was installed shortly afterwards as the first gentleman of Gibelet.

Initially, Hugo I was only formally entrusted with the administration of Gibelet as Genoese governor, but before 1135 he was given the city as a fief for 20 years in return for annual interest payments.

His wife was called Adelasia. With her he had at least two sons, of whom Wilhelm , the eldest, succeeded him as Lord of Gibelet after his death.
