William IV (Toulouse)
Wilhelm IV. (* Around 1040; † 1094 ) was Count of Toulouse and Margrave of Provence from 1060 to 1094. He followed his father Pons when he died. His mother was Almodis de la Marche , who was kidnapped and married by Raimund Berengar I , Count of Barcelona , when Wilhelm was a child. He was married to Emma von Mortain , daughter of Count Robert von Mortain , with whom he had a daughter. In addition, he and his half-sister Adélaide had an illegitimate son, Wilhelm-Jordan.
After two marriages and two sons, both of whom did not survive, he was in the position of not having a male heir. In order not to leave his property to a woman, William married a daughter, twelve-year-old Philippa, to Sancho I , King of Aragón , in 1086 , whom he endowed with such an extensive dowry that he could hope she would make no claims on Toulouse.
Two years later, in 1088, Wilhelm solved his successor problem in an unconventional way. He announced that he would move to the Holy Land and entrust the land to his brother Raimund von Saint-Gilles to rule, making it clear that he would not return. When he died six years later, his brother was able to take power for good, while his daughter, whose husband was involved in fighting with the Moors , could only protest.
